The Big Ideas of Matter
Unit 1 Chemistry looks at the ideas of matter that underpin all Chemistry. Area of Study 1 is The Periodic Table and Area of Study 2 is Materials.
Unit 2 Chemistry: Environmental chemistry consists of two areas of study. Area of study 1 is Water: students explore the special properties of water which make it so important to living things and relate the properties to chemical bonding characteristics. Area of study 2 is The atmosphere: students focus on the interaction between living things and gases of the atmosphere.
In this unit students investigate the scope of techniques available to the analytical chemist. Chemical analysis is vital in the work of the forensic chemist, the quality control chemist at a food manufacturing plant, the geologist in the field, and the environmental chemist monitoring the health of a waterway.
Students also investigate organic reaction pathways and the chemistry of particular organic molecules which is important to the work of the synthetic organic chemist. Topics include synthesis of new medicines, the generation of biochemical fuels and forensic analysis.
